The 450-km Kochi-Mangalore natural gas pipeline can boast of being a green project in more ways than one. The entire pipeline uses SOLAR based MPPT CHARGERS for cathodic protection throughout this pipeline, designed and manufactured by Statcon Energiaa, Noida. Speaking on the technology for this product, Solar EPC head at Statcon Energiaa, Mr. Vaibhav Chauhan was quoted as saying, “Earlier these kinds of pipelines incurred a lot of capex and opex in the form of conventional electricity and Gensets for Cathodic protection. Now with Solar based MPPT chargers, this has become a cost-effective way to get power locally with the help of Solar and Batteries.” Built at a cost of 3000Cr, by KALPATARU, this was inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi, via video conferencing on 6th January 2021.
Cathodic protection (CP) is a technique used to control the corrosion of a metal surface by making it the cathode of an electrochemical cell. A simple method of protection connects the metal to be protected to a more easily corroded “sacrificial metal” to be protected to a more easily corroded “sacrificial metal” to act as the anode.
