Low Carbon mobility: Electric vehicles

Electric vehicles are playing an important role in transitioning towards lowering carbon content from transport. Electric vehicles are now offering ideal opportunities with a broader aspect of introducing renewables into the transport sector of the economy. With the growing amount of population each day the need for vehicles for personal use is increasing at a great pace which subsequently is making a rise in the carbon emissions from the vehicles. Thus, to curb these effluents, energy consuming technologies like electric vehicles are creating a new demand for electricity which can be supplied by renewables.

Electric Vehicles

A study by  IRENA shows that:

  1. By the year 2030 electric passenger cars will increase from 2 million in 2016 to 200 million.
  2. Electric two wheeler and three wheeler would be more than four wheeler electric vehicles by nearly 900 million by the year 2030.
  3. Electric buses can account to a figure of around 10 million by the year 2030.

Thus, it is evident that green house vehicles (GHG) are very promising in terms of emissions of green house gases and it is rapidly penetrating in the world. So, Electric vehicles can result in major reductions of green house emissions and be at the forefront of rapid transformation in transportation. Connected autonomous electric vehicles have a great ability and potential to operate on a greater efficiency, if they are charged via renewable sources that will significantly reduce emissions and dependency on fossil fuels.
