A 3 MW load bank that splits in two

Two identical trolley-mounted units test generator sets and on-board power, working together as one 3,000 kW bank or separately.

A 4.7 MW load bank and a 3 MW trolley-mounted load bank

The challenge

What was needed

Ships and submarines must be tested under different load conditions, and diesel generator sets need testing at many load sizes. Large single-unit load banks are heavy and inflexible.

The solution

What we built

A 3,000 kW AC/DC load bank split into two identical units on trolleys that can move at up to 20 km/h. Placed side by side, one unit acts as master and the other follows, so the pair behaves as a single 3,000 kW bank; the units can also be used independently. Each is controlled by an internal PLC and HMI, with a remote-operation option, and is fully tested at the factory before dispatch.

Equipment

Key figures

Total rating3,000 kW (2 identical units)
AC380–460 V and 690 V, 50/60 Hz
DC220–360 V
ControlPLC and HMI, remote option
MobilityTrolley-mounted, up to 20 km/h
EnvironmentHumidity, rain and dust; up to 50 °C without derating

Results

  • One design covers both large and small test loads
  • Portable between test locations on its own trolleys
