Need for special inverters for microgrids and minigrids in India

Microgrids need inverters built for fluctuating, multi-source power, with protection built in and no extra infrastructure.

Specialised inverters are needed for microgrids because they convert the direct current (DC) produced by renewable sources such as solar panels, biomass and wind turbines into alternating current (AC) the grid can use. Microgrids are small, localised power grids that can run independently or alongside the main grid, and they combine DC from solar panels and batteries with AC from wind, biomass and diesel generators.

An ideal microgrid inverter must be a plug-and-play outdoor solution that requires zero infrastructure for operation. It should not need a separate AJB, ACDB or protection equipment; these should be built in for durability. Traditional inverters designed for larger grids supply stable power under normal conditions but may not cope with the fluctuations in power output that occur in microgrids.

Specialised microgrid inverters offer more dynamic and flexible output that responds to changes in the grid, such as shifts in load or in the availability of multiple renewable sources. They also include advanced control and communication features that let them coordinate with other components such as energy storage systems and power electronics devices. This matters most when several energy sources operate at once, because the system must balance supply and demand to avoid overloading or underloading the grid.

Specialised inverters are therefore essential for managing renewable sources efficiently and keeping supply reliable.

Statcon Energiaa's microgrid and minigrid inverter is designed and developed in India, including its transformers, cabinets, power stack PCBs and software, giving us full control of the design. It lets operators run with peace of mind and expand their microgrids in future.
