A 3 MW load bank that splits in two
Two identical trolley-mounted units test generator sets and on-board power, working together as one 3,000 kW bank or separately.

The challenge
What was needed
Ships and submarines must be tested under different load conditions, and diesel generator sets need testing at many load sizes. Large single-unit load banks are heavy and inflexible.
The solution
What we built
A 3,000 kW AC/DC load bank split into two identical units on trolleys that can move at up to 20 km/h. Placed side by side, one unit acts as master and the other follows, so the pair behaves as a single 3,000 kW bank; the units can also be used independently. Each is controlled by an internal PLC and HMI, with a remote-operation option, and is fully tested at the factory before dispatch.
Equipment
Key figures
| Total rating | 3,000 kW (2 identical units) |
|---|---|
| AC | 380–460 V and 690 V, 50/60 Hz |
| DC | 220–360 V |
| Control | PLC and HMI, remote option |
| Mobility | Trolley-mounted, up to 20 km/h |
| Environment | Humidity, rain and dust; up to 50 °C without derating |
Results
- One design covers both large and small test loads
- Portable between test locations on its own trolleys
